It is with a heavy heart that I inform you we are canceling the May 2020 MITES convention at Oakland Community College. Between the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic and the college closing, the MITES board looked at the information and options we had to see if it was possible and sadly made the tough decision.
We appreciate the effort your students have put forth this year as well as your dedication to them, which will go unrewarded at a state level, but in the interest of safety, we know you understand. When times become safe and we are allowed back into our classroom spaces, feel free to post projects that are done or partially done on the MITES Facebook page @MITESmichigan, using our Twitter handle @MITESMich, or on the mitesmichigan Instagram page. The board will make sure to celebrate the efforts of your students.
We look forward to seeing you at the 2021 convention which will be held at the Lansing Center from May 12-15. All memberships already paid this year will be transferred toward next year’s dues and convention, so you will not have to pay twice.
Additionally, the board has worked diligently to streamline the organization and is making recommendations for constitutional changes which need to be ratified by our membership as a whole. The goal is to make the operation of the organization run more smoothly and keep continuity in board positions. Since we are not able to meet at large, we will conduct an online vote via the MITES website from May 6-9, which is the time duration as the convention. All of the proposed constitutional changes are currently on the website for your review which can be found at mites.cc. We have also recorded meetings on the website where the changes are proposed. Our goal is to make these meetings live next year.
If there is anyone who would like to run as President Elect for next year, please email me at email@example.com by Tuesday, March 31, 2020. If no one applies, the board is recommending Chuck Luchies take over as President, I become Vice President, and Jeff Seavolt will remain as our Convention Chair. Leadership changes will take place July 1, 2020. One of the proposed constitutional changes will allow the President and Vice President to be voted in annually, allowing this person to stay in their current position. Our hope is this will bring more stability to the organization.
Again, we are disappointed by the cancellation of the convention and applaud every one of you who continually make a difference in the lives of students, even if that means teaching virtually. Please let us know how we can support you during these unprecedented times.
